On the bomber mission against German in
Lapland war 12 planes took off from Paltamo airfield. It was a mission
to bomb german troops along the road Ounasjoki -Kittilä. There were lots of
german retreating to the North. German troops opened fire against finnish
planes and nine planes got hits. BL-156 was hit hard and the plane crashed
immediately. All members of crew KIA. Pilot flight sergeant Lauri
Kurki, Observer
Lieutenant Jorma Herronen and Radio-operator/gunner Corporal Eero
Villman. Same day two Brewsters
BW-357 and
BW-379 crashed at the same area.
12 Blenheimiä nousi Paltamon
kentältä pommiittaakseen vetäytyviä saksalaisia joukkoja välillä Ounasjoki -
Kittilä - Muonio. Heti Rovaniemeltä pohjoiseen päin oli menossa paljon
vetäytyviä saksalaisia joukkoja. Pilvien alaraja oli vain 250 - 300 metriä ja
saksalaisten avaama tarkka ilmatorjunta sai osumia yhdeksään koneeseen ja
BL-156 sai täysosuman pudoten, kuin kivi. Kaikki koneessa olijat saivat
surmansa.
