BREWSTER BW-357, TOLONEN, MELTAUS, FINLAND

At the same day as finnish Blenheim bombers had they mission accomplished earlier at Meltaus area, three Brewster B-239's came to the same area. Due to bad weather they had to fly very low. There was still lots of retreating german forces around. They opened again AA-fire against to the finns. Brewsters coded BW-379 and BW-357 got severe hits and crashed to the ground. Brewster BW-357 crashed to the Tolonen area into the marshy ground. Pilot flight sergeant Kaarlo Saukkonen KIA. Another Brewster coded BW-379 crashed near Meltaus river. One Brewster survived back from that mission flown by Lieutenant Erik Teromaa. It was a sad day for the Finnish Air Force.

Kolme Brewster B-239 hävittäjää sai tehtäväksi suorittaa tiedustelu- ja maataistelulennon välillä Ounasjoki-Sodankylä-Kittilä-Rovaniemi. Lennolle lähtivät Ltn Erik Teromaa, ltn Aare Miettinen ja kersantti Kaarlo Saukkonen. Huonossa säässä matalalla lentäen koneet saapuivat Meltauksen alueelle, jossa aikaisemman suomalaisten pommituksen jäljiltä oli tiellä ruuhkaa. Saksalaisten huomattua suomalaiset koneet he avasivat heti tarkan tulen. Ainoastaan Erik Teromaa nopeiden väistöliikkeiden turvin säilyi vahingoittumattomana ja palasi tukikohtaan. Saukkonen ja Miettinen ammuttiin alas kumpaisenkin saadessa surmansa.
